Dressed Weight

The dressed weight (or hanging weight) of a cow or lamb is the weight of the animal after processing , which typically involves removing the organs and other non-meat parts. This weight represents the carcass that remains for butchering into various cuts of meat.

Estimating Dressed Weight

For cattle and lambs this weight is generally around 50% of the live weight. However, this percentage can vary based on factors such as the breed, diet, age, and condition of the animal, as well as specific butchering practices.

To calculate the dressed weight for a cow with a live weight of 530kgs:

Dressed Weight = Live Weight x Dressing Percentage

Dressed Weight = 530kgs x 0.50 = 265kgs

Approximate weight of our animals

The live weight of our cows are approximately 530kgs which ends up being approximately 265kg of dressed meat in a whole beast pack.

The live weight of our lambs are approximately 50kgs which ends up being approximately 26kgs of dressed meat in a whole lamb pack.

Dressed weight does also include bone, meat and fat the actual weight of the meat you receive will differ from the total dressed weight due to wastage during the cut process.

Humane processing of animals involves raising, handling, and slaughtering them in a way that prioritises their welfare and minimises stress, pain, and suffering throughout their lives and at the time of slaughter. This process requires following specific standards and practices to ensure the animals’ well-being from birth to death.

We are passionate about humane animal processing:

1. Humane Raising Practices:

  • Adequate Space and Shelter: Animals are provided with enough space to move freely and express natural behaviours. They are given proper shelter to protect them from harsh weather conditions.
  • Proper Nutrition and Water: Animals are fed a nutritious diet that meets their needs and have continuous access to clean, fresh water.
  • Health Care: Animals receive regular health checks, vaccinations, and veterinary care to prevent and treat illness and injury.

2. Humane Handling:

  • Gentle Handling: Animals are handled calmly and gently to reduce stress and avoid causing fear or pain. This includes proper training for handlers and using low-stress handling techniques.
  • Minimized Transport Stress: Animals are transported in conditions that minimize stress, including proper ventilation, comfortable spacing, and minimized transport duration.

3. Humane Slaughter Practices:

We perform the slaughtering process quickly and efficiently to minimize suffering and ensure that the animal does not feel pain during the procedure. We process our animals at a local licensed facility. For more information on licensing within NSW on this please click here.
